Americans consume about 400 million cups of coffee per day. Let that sink in.
Starbucks has established itself as a coffee-making giant not just in the American market, but on a global scale as well. Their chain of retail stores continues to grow rapidly. Good coffee is hard to find, and the Starbucks brand has ensured that it leaves no stone unturned in delivering the best coffee possible to its customers.
Since working from home became the norm after the COVID-19 pandemic, Starbucks has only been more motivated to make coffee for young working professionals who use Starbucks stores as workspaces. And Starbucks welcomes this. They don’t have a time limit on how long people can stay at their outlets. It’s the culture that counts.
While many of us have visited this world-renowned coffee chain at least once, there’s one question worth exploring — how did Starbucks become as BIG as it is today?
We at Zippy Opinion, one of the best paid survey sites in America, will take you on a journey to discover how Starbucks came to be.
The Inception
Seattle stands as Starbucks’ headquarters today—and rightfully so, considering that the first Starbucks store was founded there in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker. The name “Starbucks” was inspired by the novel Moby Dick, in reference to the mining town in the Cascade Range called Starbo.
Interestingly, back then, they didn’t sell coffee as a drink. They only sold coffee beans, which they purchased directly from growers.
The Nurturing
As Starbucks grew steadily, the original founders sold two stores to Howard Schultz, a former manager. Schultz was inspired by the coffee bar culture in Italy and helped rebrand the stores. By 1989, Starbucks had 46 locations and was roasting 2 million pounds of coffee each year.
The Public Offering
In 1992, with around 140 outlets in operation, Starbucks filed for an IPO (Initial Public Offering), selling 12% of the company to the public and raising $25 million. In the following months, the company’s share price rose by 70%—a phenomenal return by any standard!
As it stands right now
As of 2020, Starbucks generates approximately $24 billion in revenue and employs over 350,000 people around the world.
From starting out as a small coffee bean store in 1971 to becoming a global coffee retail chain that jumpstarts the mornings of millions of happy customers, Starbucks has grown into a household name. All that, while their employees hilariously misspell every customer’s name on the cup!
