A Standstill in Time
The COVID-19 pandemic is an unfortunate event in history. It has caused immense grief, and we’re living through a difficult time not seen in at least two whole generations. That said, we at Zippy Opinion are taking a look at six things we expected and six things we didn’t during the COVID-19 pandemic.
What Are the 6 Things You Saw Coming?
1. Businesses Took a Deep Dive
This one’s a no-brainer! With almost every country in the world enforcing lockdown protocols, businesses took a massive hit in revenue. Numerous employees were left in the lurch, facing pay cuts across industries. Small businesses that lacked the capital to build a digital presence suffered the most. Big businesses also took a nosedive, but those that adapted quickly to digital operations emerged stronger during the pandemic.
2. Corona Beer Left on the Shelves
This isn’t surprising. When the virus shares its name with a beverage brand, it doesn’t bode well for business. People couldn’t disassociate the virus from the beer, leading to bottles of Corona being left untouched on shelves. It’s widely known in marketing that negative word associations can impact a brand. Since the virus was named ‘corona’—meaning ‘crown,’ referencing its shape—the beer brand suffered immense losses and had to invest heavily in separating its image from the virus. Talk about bad luck in branding!
3. Nature Crept Into Civilization
With lockdowns in full effect, people stayed home, and nature slowly began reclaiming its space. Streets once bustling with people were now quiet, allowing wildlife to flourish. Animals began marking territories closer to urban areas. For decades, humans had pushed wildlife deeper into jungles. Now, it seemed only fair that nature made a comeback. In fact, some species previously thought extinct were even spotted again!
4. Mental Health Issues on the Rise
As the world stayed indoors, mental health became a major concern. People faced increased stress and anxiety due to isolation, job losses, and uncertainty. Life got harder, and some individuals experienced early signs of mental illness. (You can check out our blog on the early symptoms of mental illnesses to know more.)
5. The Advent of Digitization
Everyone—and we mean everyone—started going digital. From your tech-averse aunt to school kids, everyone got online. Digital platforms grew exponentially in 2020. Companies shifted their operations and sales online, and those who embraced this change saw great success.
6. A Potential COVID-19 Vaccine Process Took Major Strides
Governments and pharmaceutical companies worldwide rushed to develop a COVID-19 vaccine. Normally, vaccines take up to a decade to test and approve, but urgency pushed this timeline. As of writing this, vaccines are available but not yet fully distributed across all countries. We wait impatiently for global access to return to a sense of normalcy—whatever the new ‘normal’ may be.
What Are the 6 Things You Didn’t See Coming?
1. The Toilet Paper Hoarding
Primarily in the United States, people began hoarding toilet paper. While stocking up made sense, why toilet paper became the item of choice puzzled the entire world. Why not food or medical supplies? Yeah… we didn’t get it either.
2. The Release of 3 UFO Videos
We always wondered if aliens existed. But when the Pentagon released three actual videos of Unidentified Flying Objects, it confirmed many suspicions. Surprisingly, this didn’t create the massive buzz it would’ve in any other year. Were aliens observing us during the pandemic? Who knows? Hopefully, more evidence surfaces soon.
3. Masks Became a Fashion Accessory
Masks turned into everyday essentials and quickly evolved into fashion statements. Who would’ve thought in 2019 that investing in protective masks could make you rich? Companies began using branded masks, and countries enforced strict mask mandates. The “No mask, no service” policy became the new norm.
4. Online Surveys Became a Hit
Nobody saw this coming. With door-to-door data collection being limited, online market research became the go-to method. Brands like Zippy Opinion grew tremendously during this time, offering more rewards than ever to users. Here’s a quick overview of what we do:

5. Poland Accidentally Invaded the Czech Republic
This one gave us a laugh! In June 2020, Polish troops mistakenly set up near a chapel across the Czech Republic border during COVID-19 deployments. They even stopped Czech citizens from entering the area. Once the mistake was identified, Poland issued an apology and corrected the misunderstanding. Oops!
6. The Sad Demise of Chadwick Boseman
While some noticed Chadwick Boseman’s frail appearance, the world was shocked by his untimely death. The loss of the Black Panther star came unexpectedly and left millions heartbroken. Alongside Boseman, the pandemic claimed countless lives—many of whom we’ll never know by name. His passing served as a grim reminder of how fragile life truly is.
Closing COVID Statements
While we may be past the worst of it, the pandemic is not over yet. Cases have slowed, but it’s still essential to follow safety protocols. If we’ve learned anything, it’s how unpredictable life can be. Stay safe, stay aware—and remember, the new normal is something we’re all figuring out together.
